Following Sony’s announcement that it was canceling its deal to publish Kojima Productions’ Physint, questions have started popping up about whether this was due to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach potentially underperforming commercially. In a new report, Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliott has estimated that the latest game by Kojima Productions managed to sell 2.5 million copies across PS5 and PC since its June 2025 release.

Considering the fact that the PS5 version came out before its PC port – which was released in May 2026 – most of the copies sold have been for the console release, amounting to around 1.8 million copies. Across both platforms, the title has generated an estimated $170 million in revenue.

In a further breakdown, Elliott has estimated that around 1 million copies of the PS5 version were sold in the first two months of the game’s release. The following months, however, led to the title underperforming, down from the strong 722,000 sales in June 2025 to under 30,000 by the time August 2025 rolled around. The PS5 revenue generated by the game has been estimated at around $129 million, 65 percent of which was generated in the first two months alone.

On the PC side of things, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach sold around 550,000 copies in its first two months – making up 80 percent of its total lifetime sales on Steam. The report has also noted that the title’s price tag being reduced through repeated discounts hasn’t helped matters.

The original Death Stranding, on the other hand, has managed to garner 5 million copies since its 2019 release. However, the title has also been available at deep discounts during sales in the seven years since it first came out, which likely helped quite a bit. In total, the game generated around $243 million in revenue, with the PS4 version making up the bulk of sales at 71 percent, followed by 25 percent on PC, and 4 percent on Xbox.

Interestingly, Hideo Kojima said that Sony’s announcement that it wouldn’t publish Physint anymore came as a surprise back in the middle of June. Despite this, however, Kojima Productions managed to ink a deal with Xbox to publish the espionage title, and in the process, further expanded on their relationship beyond the console maker publishing the horror game OD.

In the meantime, rumors have indicated that Sony canceled its deal with Kojima Productions due to the game’s development going “well over budget” despite its release being quite some time away. Aside from this, the report also indicated that Sony wasn’t keen on investing “hundreds of millions” into Physint for a number of reasons, with exclusivity being a major one.

While Sony has moved away from releasing its single-player games on PC to instead focus on boosting PS5 console sales, Kojima Productions has continued to pursue a multiplatform release strategy for its title. We saw this with both Death Stranding games, with the first one even making its way to Xbox eventually. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, on the other hand, is only available on PC and PS5, at least for now.
