The next year of Roblox has been outlined by three top executives at the annual Roblox Developers Conference, and it’s shaping up to be a banger for players and creators alike. Changes are coming to a number of areas of the ecosystem, making it easier for you to play and create your own game on the platform. Focused on “the creation of anything, anywhere, and by anyone,” as Lead Engineer Nick Tornow says, here are all the major announcements from the ground at RDC 2026.

Starting off with the good news for players, we have some key improvements to how you can play your favorite Roblox games. Firstly, changes are coming to Roblox chat to try and improve the system after last year’s age categories stunted its use somewhat. A specific friend tab is coming to chat, so you can talk with friends directly – whether it’s over text, using the new AI-powered speech-to-text capabilities, or in-game voice chat itself, it’ll be easier than ever to chat to your pals within the app. Plus, emojis are coming. We love emojis.

Alongside this, at the end of this year, you’ll be able to play directly in your browser, rather than installing the app, for the first time. This allows for not only a smoother experience, but one that’s more accessible to share with friends – as Tornow puts it, “friends can share a text or social media post, and someone can click it and drop right into the game.” This accompanies the announcement that Roblox games will have modes that are playable offline starting from mid-2027, meaning you’ll be able to start playing instantly even when your WiFi is down, or you’re on-the-go. Offline support is accompanied by standalone Roblox apps, which allows you to join games without going through the platform.

All of these additions, combined with faster loading and rendering times, means that your gaming will be smoother and more efficient than ever. Despite the announcements of graphics improvements like additional blur and shadow, alongside orthographic 2.5D-style camera support, you should find it runs faster than ever – Roblox has clearly been hard at work on tech developments. The demos I’ve seen of this are pretty night-and-day in terms of loading times, so that’s promising.

As for the other tech advancements, it’s hard to say whether they’ll be welcomed or shunned. Head of Foundation AI & Infrastructure Anupam Singh unveiled apparent improvements in Roblox’s AI-powered software. These include the capacity to generate entire games in 10-15 minutes using a single prompt, characters being able to pick up objects and interact with them for the first time, the ability to use Roblox Reality to change the environment and weather effects without editing the code, and AI-powered testing without needing real players. Plus, AI will assist with NPC behaviors, including generating dialogue and text in response to player action.

I’ll admit that I’m extremely sceptical about whether these developments are a good thing or not, but Singh confidently declares “we believe that Roblox Reality will give players and creators the ability to change environments – photorealism is very brutal in gaming, but we are going to change that with Roblox Reality.” The question is: did anybody ask for photorealism in Roblox?

Either way, the business side is also undergoing some changes. An undeniable, but slightly strange win for creators is the introduction of Roblox Wallet and Roblox Card. The wallet function is a much more obvious plus – it allows developers to collect their profits automatically in their own currency every day, alongside showing them a breakdown of where their profits are coming from. These analytics will be rolling out in the US in December of this year, while the UK and EU will have to wait for the first half of 2027. After that, it’ll be a worldwide feature.

What’s much more odd is the launch of Roblox Card, which is a literal card with which devs can spend their earnings “in the real world.” Roblox has partnered with Airwallex for this, and as Chief Business Officer Enrico D’Angelo puts it, “this does not mean that Roblox will become a financial institution or run as a bank.”

To me, Roblox Card seems a little unnecessary, and I wonder how the company intends to profit from its existence. Even still, the developers at RDC 20216 seemed excited when it was announced. It’s going to be a busy year is ahead for players and developers alike.
