When the press release for this “game” hit my inbox, I actually stuck it in MOP’s work chat as a joke because haha look it’s about an onion who’s a chef. But then I watched the trailer, and it said the magic words:
“Online 3-player co-op.”
And now you’re learning about the onion who’s a chef too.
“In Boil Cabbage Make Soup, you get to serve a cast of weird and wonderful characters from the 9th Dawn series,” sayeth the dev team at UK-based Valorware. “Decorate your island in different styles, dress up your onion – and use your hard-earned gold to level up your soup-making skills and increase your onion’s soupy production. Place the game anywhere you like on your desktop and let your onion do all the hard work in the background while you focus on other tasks – enjoying a selection of both chill and lively music from the 9th Dawn soundtrack.”
Yeah, this is one of those little idler games like the wildly popular Bongo Cat. I’m partial to Rusty’s Retirement, myself, and Dream Globe was really pretty. But like Bongo Cat, this one’s got multiplayer. How does it work?
“You might be surprised to know that Boil Cabbage Make Soup actually supports online multiplayer. Play with two other friends and earn special bonuses while checking out each other’s islands. Most idle games are single-player only – but Valorware treasures the idea of having games bring people together. You can feel connected even during work hours – or while playing a silly game about making soup!”
Apparently, this whole game is Valorware’s practice game as the devs learned model and rig critters. “This project was the perfect chance to showcase those skills,” dev Tom Au deadpans. “3-D onion skills.”
See, we might be in the bad timeline, but sometimes it delivers a treat, like reinventing cute little Facebook games for you to giggle at with your friends while you’re working. The game is out next week on August 12th.
