Vile: Exhumed, a narrative horror game where players uncover dark secrets inside a computer, was one of the first high-profile casualties of Valve’s payment processor battle. The FMV game, which explores parasocial relationships, addresses topics such as sexual assault; it was not actually an adult game about sex. Nonetheless, the game was pulled from Steam soon after release.
Now, a year after the censorship debacle, creator Cara Cadaver (aka Final Girl Games) is offering fans a way to own the game physically — and to donate to a good cause in the same swoop.
A $10 physical release of Vile: Exhumed is in the works, and fans of the game (if not protesters against Valve’s censorship policies) can sign up to be notified of when it goes on sale here. The new version of the game will come in a jewel case with “visually distressed paper inserts,” a press release from Final Girl Games states. The game will be packaged to resemble a black plastic bag sealed with duct tape.
Vile: Exhumed, for those who missed it, was an intense game that explores the “horrors of parasocial obsession.” In it, players must peruse computer files, forum posts, and other types of digital media to discover why a former adult film actress left the industry. While the game explored topics of sexual violence, it didn’t have any nudity. The game was affected by the 2025 battle between Valve, Visa, and Mastercard. Unless Valve pulled down potentially controversial games, the platform faced the prospect of losing access to major payment processors.
“This censorship of my work is a direct attack on creative expression and artistic freedom, and it will not stop with false accusations of sexual content,” developer Cara Cadaver wrote on the Vile: Exhumed website not long after the game was pulled. In the aftermath, Cadaver made the game a free download that was accessible to anyone who wanted it. Fans who wanted to support the creator were given the option to donate directly.
“By giving the game away, for free, to whoever wants to play it, I am doing the same thing I set out to do when I started working on Vile: Exhumed, a game about sexual assault, male entitlement, and misogyny,” the developer wrote in 2025. “Taking back my agency.
“No one is allowed to dictate what kind of horror is acceptable, or what stories are allowed to be told.”
Now, with a physical release, fans can support Cara Cadaver while also giving to charity. The developer promises to donate 50% of the proceeds to a charity assisting families, refugees and women escaping violence.
“Seeing the horror community create a home for my work was incredibly special, but it was hard seeing my creative vision, and such a personal story, just become a headline about censorship,” the developer said in a press release. “Working on the physical edition of Vile: Exhumed allowed me not only to revisit the feelings I had around the wrongful ban of the game last year, but also step back into Candy and Molly’s world, and give them one more moment.”
Cara Cadaver added that a physical release will stand in “defiance” of censorship while also ensuring the game’s long-term accessibility.
