This aquatic sandbox city-builder is free on Epic Games Store right now

It’s Thursday, so I’m told, and that means it’s time for Epic Games’ free games. Technically speaking, there’s only one free game this week, but since it looks so lovely and colorful, I’ll forgive them.

Flotsam is your freebie for the next seven days: a city-building game with a distinctly aquatic twist where you rebuild humanity after the world floods. Your canvas is, unsurprisingly, the ocean, and you must construct a fully operational city on the sea while also striving to do better than merely survive.

Fuel, for instance, is a dirty affair at first; burning firewood is inefficient and doesn’t do much for the environment, so using the in-depth research tree, you can eventually improve your facilities and create a healthier living space for your citizens. Did I mention that the top-tier electricity involves eels? Eel-ectricity, they call it.

Explore, expand, have a bunch of little guys all deep-frying delicious food. Start by scavenging what you can and strive toward something self-sustaining and clean. Reduce pollutants for everyone’s health and hopefully reduce your impact on your surroundings. The game has a Very Positive rating on Steam with 2,056 reviews.

I really like the idea of a city-builder that isn’t overly concerned with size alone; Flotsam looks to improve the quality of life, rather than just make more of it, and there’s something neat in that. Plus, it’s free, so you may as well give it a go.

Flotsam is free to keep via the Epic Games Store. You can claim it between Thursday, November 5 at 8am PT / 11am ET / 3pm GMT / 4pm CET and Thursday, November 12 at 8am PT / 11am ET / 3pm GMT / 4pm CET. Get it here while you can.
