Nintendo Announces 16 Percent Decline in Operating Profits in Latest Fiscal Quarter

In its most recent quarterly financial report, Nintendo has reported a decline in profits. According to the report, the company’s operating profit fell by 16 percent to ¥73.9 billion in the second fiscal quarter, roughly translating to $468 million. This has been attributed to a 15 percent decline in sales, which the company said was a bigger decline than it was expecting.

Despite the dropping profits, however, Nintendo remains confident in its forecast for 3 percent profit growth in the fiscal year. With the loss in sales being the biggest factor, this could be the result of the Nintendo Switch 2 beginning to lose its sales momentum in the second year of the console’s life cycle. According to the director of equity research at Morningstar, Kazunori Ito, the slowdown, while expected, “arrived earlier than anticipated.”

Ito also said in a statement to Bloomberg that this is an indication that “investors have cooled on the Switch 2 platform.”

It is worth noting that the company is also heading into what might end up being a tumultuous quarter, since the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 looms over just about every company in the gaming industry. Ahead of the launch of this behemoth, Nintendo has released its own first-party game – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake. Since it is a remake of a beloved classic, the title is expected to do well among Nintendo Switch 2 owners.

The fiscal reports have also revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 2.67 million in the quarter ending on September 30th, resulting in a total lifetime sale of 26.35 million of the current-gen console. It is selling at a faster rate than the Nintendo Switch. However, it is also worth noting that sales have slowed down considerably. The Nintendo Switch, in the meantime, is currently sitting at lifetime sales of 157.2 million units.

When it comes to games, 15.04 million units of Nintendo Switch 2 software were sold during the quarter. When compared to the 610,000 units of Nintendo Switch games sold in the same period, it looks like the company has largely succeeded when it comes to consumer adoption of its current-gen platform.

Among the top performers for the Nintendo Switch this year have been Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, which sold 8.3 million copies, as well as Rhythm Heaven Groove, which sold 2.89 million copies.

On the Nintendo Switch 2, Mario Kart World has continued to dominate sales rankings, sitting at 16.48 million copies sold so far, with Donkey Kong Bananza being in a distant second place with 5.05 million sales.

In the meantime, Nintendo Switch 2 players have also been able to get their hands on Nintendo Switch Sports Resort this week. For more details on the title, take a look at our review, where we gave it a score of 8 out of 10. We praised the sheer amount of content it offers, as well as its charm and sense of place, which the franchise has lacked for some time. Our main complaints were the gyroscope-only controls, which added unnecessary fiddliness to the general gameplay.
