This summer has already seen prices of Nvidia’s latest RTX 50 GPUs rise to record levels, with prices of some models shooting up 40% from July to August alone. And there’s still no sign of respite, with Nvidia’s flagship gaming graphics card, the RTX 5090, currently showing as out of stock at most official retailers across the US.
Webites such as Amazon, Newegg, and Best Buy do still show examples of the RTX 5090 available to purchase, but listings direct from their own warehouses remain out of stock, with the listings coming from third-party marketplace sellers. The prices on these listings drastically exceed the GPU’s official price, with many priced over $6,000 and even $9,000 in some listings.
A reminder – when Nvidia originally launched the RTX 5090 back in January 2025, it set a recommended retail price of $1,999 in the US, but it’s been a long time since we’ve seen that price appear, apart from the occasional surprise restock at retailers, which typically sell out right away.
The RTX 5090 has been hit particularly hard in the GPU pricing crisis. Despite Nvidia touting this as a card for gamers, the significant 32GB of GDDR7 VRAM and its raw power is also making it an increasingly popular choice for AI applications, for firms who are desperate to get their hands on whatever computing power they can. Hong Kong-based hardware site HKEPC reaffirmed that this week, sharing shots which show what appear to be hundreds of RTX 5090 GPUs wrapped up in pallets, ready to be deployed in AI applications.
There’s clearly no sign of GPU prices dropping any time soon, but a recent Steam survey suggests that older GPUs like the RTX 3060 are still up to scratch for most gamers. There are still some signs that a budget gaming PC build remains possible, particularly after AMD revealed a new $99 gaming CPU last week.
