Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second entry in Square Enix’s grand remake of the classic 1997 role-playing game, did not receive any major post-release DLC or expansions. That could change with the trilogy’s climactic conclusion, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. New datamining on the Epic Games Store has revealed several possible pieces of post-release content, which appear to support game director Naoki Hamaguchi’s previous comments on the potential of story DLC in Revelation.

The listings were spotted using EpicDB, a third-party tool that tracks Epic Games Story content. The listings mention a Premium Edition, a Premium Plus Edition, and pre-order bonuses. These all seem pretty expected for a major release, but it is the other listings that are of special interest. Nine pieces of DLC are teased, as well as a “Story Expansion Pass.” While both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth featured a handful of minor additions like extra summons and cosmetic items, only Remake received major story content post-release in the form of “Episode Intermission”, which was then packaged with the updated Intergrade version of the base game.

Hamaguchi stated in 2024 that Rebirth would not receive an “Intermission” style expansion so that the team could focus on releasing the third part of the trilogy as quickly as possible. Following the official reveal of Revelation during this year’s Summer Game Fest showcase, Hamaguchi teased that story expansions are back on the table for the trilogy’s conclusion. Speaking to Famitsu (as translated by Genki), Hamaguchi said that potential expansions could happen if there is enough fan demand. While this suggests it isn’t a sure thing, the fan demand is likely there already.

Players have especially been vocal about the desire for an expansion focused on the brooding but lovable party member, Vincent Valentine. Hamaguchi further teased that if Square Enix develops story expansions for Revelation, these could explore the extended Final Fantasy 7 universe. That opens up the potential for Revelation to tackle spinoff games like Dirge of Cerberus (which stars Valentine) or the animated sequel film, Advent Children. There are already explicit connections between the Remake trilogy and the wider Final Fantasy 7 world.

Many fans theorize that characters from the prequel title Crisis Core will make an appearance in Revelation, as the PSP title was also recently remade in the form of 2022’s Crisis Core – Final Fantasy 7 – Reunion. The protagonist of that title, Zack, plays a large role in both Remake and Rebirth, and Square Enix has teased that his story will continue in Revelation. Other characters could also appear, or story expansions might close any loose threads from the base game.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be released in spring 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
