Eldor caught my eye when its solo dev posted it to the MMORPG subreddit this week largely because the thread title said it’s “inspired by UO:T2A,” and I suspect I’m in a shrinking group of people who knows what those letters even mean now.
Ultima Online’s The Second Age expansion was the first UO expansion and arguably the first MMORPG expansion period, setting the stage for what MMORPG players could expect going forward. It added a whole new continent to the game and some seriously difficult content at the time. It was also originally hard to access, though recalling and gating was added eventually.
In any case, Eldor is not a copy, it’s not a rogue server, and in fact it’s not even isometric.
“Features include open world PvP, no classes, full loot, skill-based progression, player-driven economy, housing, crafting, and a criminal/murder system,” the dev writes. “Ready for playtest soon to test the dedicated server, persistence and aoi system soon.” He also says the PvP will be tempered by safe zones and a criminal system that sounds more penalizing than UO ever was.
The video actually makes the game look more post-UO than anything, like if EverQuest and Legends of Aria did a meet cute. Either way, it’s one to keep an eye on if you’re into indie MMOs. If you wanna test it, hit the dev up on Reddit.
