Sometimes when we’re trawling our way through the gaming world, we come across something that’s so off-the-wall and unexpected that we feel compelled to highlight it, even if its gameplay loop falls on the very edges of our periphery. That certainly is the case of Voltaire: The Vegan Vampire, a single-player or two-player “farming action roguelite” that sees players pushing back against the idea that vampires can’t live on a plant-based diet.
Gameplay in Voltaire is split into two halves: During the day, players will plant and tend to crops with magical seeds, expand their farm, and explore the local area to find food that empowers their characters. At night, players will have to protect their crops from invading enemies and bosses sent by Dracular to force his rebellious son to forego his veggie-loving ways. The game supports split screen co-op and Steam’s Remote Play Together feature, and has just recently announced a September 30th console release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox X|S.
Judging from Steam user reviews, this one appears to be a bit of a mixed bag though overall reviews are at “mostly positive,” as many enjoy its charm and overall aesthetic, while others complain of bugs and daytime gameplay feeling grindy.
