Welcome back to another roundup of MMOs and MMO-adjacent multiplayer games you’ve never heard of! And yes, we agree that the titles of this gaggle of obscure games is a bit oddball. It’s hard to stand out in our sub-genres nowadays. And if you’ve followed these news stories before, some of these names might strike familiar.
The Holdouts
We’ll begin with a game that we’ve covered in this digest before, The Holdouts, a solo and co-op third person shooter where players can cobble together weapons from a wide assortment of random items. The game comes to us from Ruckus Games, an indie firm founded by former Elder Scrolls Online and Borderlands 3 creative director Paul Sage. It appears that playtests have been opened as of this past June on Wednesdays and Fridays, though testing is under an NDA. Those who want to join in must sign up through FirstLook.
Truxton Extreme
This one’s for the old-school shmup fans in the audience: Truxton Extreme is a newly launched entry of the vertical scrolling shooter from 1988 with multiple modes including a story mode, a beginner-friendly “heart starter” mode, a mode that involves saving aliens to unlock and populate a village (seriously), and for the purposes of our coverage, two-person co-op. with shared lives, bombs, and scores The game is available in multiple physical and digital editions.
Godius: Eternal War
You might recall this one from our first report this past June: Godius: Eternal War is a re-release of an old 2-D RvR MMORPG from 1999 that was on its way to being revivified by Korean developer Playinworld. The game did indeed make it to its scheduled June 27th release on Steam, albeit not without some server issues that have persisted through July and this week. As a show of thanks for players’ patience through the tumult, Godius will be hosting a summer-themed event that awards several character growth items for cumulative (not daily) logins. The event will run between August 13th and September 17th.
