Starfield is one of those games that’s had players firmly in two camps: those who loved every second of the adventure it gradually pulls you into, and those who it couldn’t manage to capture in those crucial early hours, and who since never gave it the chance it deserves.
That’s a damn shame for a game that’s as lovely as this one, and one that even made its PS5 debut and added a new expansion this year, with another year of content set to follow. However, Kurt Kuhlmann, former Lead Systems Designer, believes it didn’t do well enough commercially to greenlight a sequel.
Speaking to VideoGamesChronicle, he said that news of a sequel would be “very surprising” to him since the first game wasn’t “anywhere near successful enough” for the possibility. He did, however, lament the loss of what he believes would have been a game closer to director Todd Howard’s vision for what it should have been.
“It’s, in a way, too bad, because I think with the lessons learned on Starfield, a Starfield 2 could have been much closer to the game that Todd had…You can envision that game, you can imagine that game. That’s not quite what Starfield really is.”
Well, we’re hoping its Year 3 content can bridge the gap a little, but it’s still a little sad to see what could have been the next step in a rather solid adventure fade into the nothingness of space. This is an instance where we’d be delighted to be wrong, and will happily eat that slice of humble pie if a miracle happens to occur. All we can do is hope in the meantime.
