Executives at CD Projekt have revealed more details about the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3, which is set to be released in 2027. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to revisit the adventures of Geralt of Rivia, it sounds like the upcoming DLC will have plenty to keep you busy. The new details about the expansion were revealed during CD Projekt’s financial earnings call on Thursday.

“When it comes to the scope. I’d say it’s actually a bit closer to Blood and Wine, but this is super-subjective,” said co-CEO Michał Nowakowski. “It really depends on how you’re going to play — what’s your playthrough. But we’re definitely making a proper big expansion, is the message I would send out there.”

2016’s Blood and Wine expansion takes between 25 and 40 hours to beat, which means players can expect a pretty substantial experience from Songs of the Past. Nowakowski said that the DLC won’t be a literal setup for The Witcher 4 — which does not yet have an official release date — but instead a way to refamiliarize fans with the world of the franchise.

“First and foremost, we really wanted to deliver a great experience to the fans — a really cool expansion that’s going to make people happy that they can come back to The Witcher 3 setting,” Nowakowski said. “Indirectly, yes, it is a reminder [about the franchise]. It is, in a way, a prologue, although it’s not a prologue in a verbatim way in [that] it’s a prologue for the actual Witcher 4.”

Elsewhere during the call, Nowakowski also revealed that the company had initially planned to release the upcoming Witcher 3 expansion this year, but held back the launch until 2027 in order to ensure its quality. “We decided, together with the development team, that the game will be launching in 2027 to achieve the best possible result from the consumer standpoint,” he said.

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past will be released next year on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
