Intergalactic is officially set to receive a full reveal in 2027, but what about The Last of Us? After all, it wouldn’t be The Last of Us Day without some news for the future. Naughty Dog president Neil Druckmann probably felt the same way, confirming that two “very exciting new projects” for the series are in the works.
Don’t get too hype for release dates, though. He noted that they’re in the “very early stages, so we can’t say much about them at this point.” However, he confirmed that both projects will “expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part 1 and Part 2.”
“The world of The Last of Us means a great deal to us, and we wouldn’t return to it unless we had something meaningful to say. We believe these stories are worth telling.”
The last project in the series was the ill-fated online-only title, cancelled in December 2023 (despite being 80 percent complete, per former director Vinit Agarwal). This was because launch would have only been the beginning – the studio would then have to focus on post-launch support. Rather than devoting so many resources – especially with how poorly Sony’s live-service initiative had been going – it opted to remain in the single-player, narrative-focused space.
Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida corroborated this, claiming the cancellation was so that the studio could focus on Intergalactic. As for the new projects, one would assume that going beyond the “canon” of the current games would mean a fresh cast, though it would be bizarre if there weren’t any connections to present-day events.
Time will tell, though, so stay tuned for more details, hopefully sooner rather than later.
