While Capcom has been on a hot streak over the last few years, one of the publisher’s most annoying tendencies is adding strange microtransactions to some of its games, like Monster Hunter and Dragon’s Dogma. Thankfully, the company is backtracking on at least one controversial form of nickel-and-diming. Monster Hunter Wilds players will soon be able to edit their hunter and Palico’s base appearance as many times as they like for free, without needing to purchase Character Edit Vouchers.
Previously, after creating your hunter and Palico’s core appearance at the start of the game, you needed a Character Edit Voucher to make additional changes. Capcom sold a three-pack of Character Edit Vouchers for $6.99, a three-pack of Palico Edit Vouchers for $6.99, and a bundle of both for $9.99. While the company occasionally gave out free vouchers, monetizing this feature at all was ridiculous.
Thankfully, Capcom is finally coming to its senses. When Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance launches in 2027, editing your character and Palico’s appearances will be free. Until then, Capcom will make these vouchers unavailable for purchase on Dec. 3, 2026, while giving all players 10 Character Edit Vouchers and 10 Palico Edit Vouchers for free. The company will also distribute a Special Thank-You Pendant Set to those who previously purchased any voucher pack, which includes the Heavenly Hog and Beezleboar.
While these vouchers were unpopular when Monster Hunter Wilds launched last year, Capcom is likely making this change to build hype for next year’s major expansion, Ascendance. Another motivating factor is that Wilds was outsold by the older Monster Hunter Rise during Capcom’s Q2 2025. After announcing the voucher changes, Capcom revealed new quality-of-life features, including the ability to quick-swap weapons without mounting your Seikret, an enhanced Monster Field Guide that shows the numerical values behind enemy weak spots, and the ability to create more comprehensive loadouts.
Ascendance will introduce a new region and new monsters, along with the Boosted Action mechanic, which lets players use enhanced moves after building up a meter. While we don’t know Ascendance’s exact release date, it seems possible it will release earlier in the year rather than later, given how many details Capcom has already announced.
