Grand Theft Auto 6 has dominated all conversation after its Extended Look, especially with so many other details revealed via previews. Add the sheer number of animations to the tally, with Rockstar telling The New York Times that there are “well over” 600,000.
It’s especially impressive when measured with its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto 5, which had 55,000. Red Dead Redemption 2, considered a pinnacle in animation almost eight years after its launch, had 300,000. Grand Theft Auto 6 effectively doubles that and sprinkles some more on top as a treat.
While it sounds far-fetched – even though we saw the sheer range for ourselves – it’s far from unreasonable. Rockstar recently revealed that its development team has more than doubled since it released Red Dead Redemption 2. The latter ranged from 1,600 developers to over 3,000 in the credits, so it makes sense, though learning just how gargantuan of an endeavor Grand Theft Auto 6 truly is remains as shocking as ever.
That it’s made without generative AI and won’t feature any monetisation is also important en route to its November 19th launch for Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Stay tuned for more updates, and in the meantime, check out how much larger the world is compared to RDR2’s.
