Destiny remaster rumors are giving Bungie fans a reason to believe again

Bungie has been through the wringer lately, with Marathon struggling to find its footing and Destiny 2’s live-service development coming to an end, kind of. Could the studio have something up its sleeve that could bring back one of its most beloved games? A cryptic social media post from a Bungie executive is sparking speculation that Destiny could finally get a remaster and a long-awaited PC port.

Josh Deane, Bungie’s head of product and Marathon general manager, recently responded to a fan video showing Destiny running at a crisp 4K resolution, outputting 60fps, and adopting a fairly high field of view on PC. His response? “Seems like a pretty game, wonder if it will do well…” He accompanies it with a popcorn GIF, just in case you wanted more vagueposting in your life.

Now, I wouldn’t go getting excited just yet. Destiny launched in 2014 on PlayStation and Xbox, yet somehow never officially made the jump to PC. You can play a remake in Minecraft, though. Destiny 2 eventually brought the franchise to desktop, but all of the previous content remains unavailable to PC players through an official PC port.

In September, Bungie announced it was beginning work on restoring vaulted Destiny 2 content, while promising to share more about the franchise’s future. That doesn’t confirm a Destiny remake, but it does suggest the studio wants to celebrate its history while figuring out what’s next. That’s plenty of room for speculation.

It’d undoubtedly be great to see some modern quality-of-life improvements hit the much-beloved FPS. However, I’m not sure whether its actually worth it in practice. Bringing Destiny’s content to Destiny 2 seems like the safer play, and would make more sense.

However, with Bungie looking to rebuild trust and keep the Destiny universe alive, a remaster could be a neat way to bring lapsed players back. Whether this cryptic tease amounts to anything more than wishful thinking, we’ll have to wait and see.
