An explosive campaign is pretty much a given for any new Call of Duty title, but it’s multiplayer that keeps fans coming back for more. Well, the recently announced Modern Warfare 4 has good news. Alongside 12 new core maps at launch, Infinity Ward promises the “most authentic” gunplay for multiplayer yet. Oh, and no more bloom.

“A new weapon-first technology stack unifies precision aiming, physical handling, realistic audio propagation, enhanced visibility, and smarter combat perception into the most authentic Modern Warfare gunplay yet,” it said on the announcement blog. “Bullet trajectory, weapon motion, Operator stance, camera, audio, FOV, and target visibility all line up in one highly tuned combat fidelity system. The promise is simple: no bloom, no guesswork, and no doubt. Every shot tells the truth.”

What this means is more accurate hipfire shots, coupled with “rebuilt” recoil and weapon handling and refinements to depth of field and visual effects. It also promises “seamless and responsive” traversal, including expanded options for jumping, hanging, climbing and mantling. No mentions of Omnimovement from Black Ops 6 and 7, with a focus instead on “the grounded realism, physicality, and combat intensity that define Modern Warfare.”

Besides the new maps, there’s also Kill Block, described as a “live-fire training facility built for elite operators, which gives players a fresh gameplay experience with every new round.” In actuality, it’s a multiplayer mode with changing modular parts, resulting in over 500 distinct map configurations.

Think of it as a dash of rogue-like in your Call of Duty multiplayer experience with support for 3v3 and 10v10 matches, and plans to expand it in upcoming seasons. Of course, you can also expect separate Gunfight and Big War maps.

Other notable changes include a revamped Create-A-Class system, the return of Gunsmith with Gunny, a new feature to automatically assemble builds based on your playstyle, and Apex Attachments. The latter unlock once a weapon has been fully leveled and provide “unique modifications that can significantly change how that weapon behaves in combat,” whether it’s firing behavior, handling, or even its overall role.

As usual, Infinity Ward will provide more details in the coming months, with DMZ set for a major reveal on June 7th. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23rd for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with the latter co-developed by Digital Legends.
