Breachers: Outbreak Effectively Canceled By Triangle Factory

Developer Triangle Factory has put its latest project, co-op PvE extraction shooter Breachers: Outbreak, on hold less than three months after it was officially revealed.

Outbreak was announced at June’s VR Games Showcase, actually opening the main show as the first big reveal. Triangle Factory broke the disappointing news in an announcement on its Discord:

After a lot of internal discussion, we’ve made the difficult decision to put development of Breachers: Outbreak on hold.

The truth is that it’s a hard time to build and ship a high-quality VR game like this, and the interest we’ve seen so far doesn’t support a project of this scale. We’d rather be upfront about that now than keep going and release something we’re not proud of. We want to put our efforts into a project that VR players everywhere will be extremely excited about.

We’re sorry to let down everyone who was excited about Outbreak. But not everything is going to waste. Some of what we built for Outbreak will find its way into the main Breachers game itself. More on that when the time is right.

The end of the statement offers hope of the PvE gameplay Outbreak promised coming to the original Breachers, but that very idea implies the standalone game is effectively dead. “On hold” and “on the shelf” are common phrases studios will use to avoid saying the word ‘canceled’ outright. This is the second project this year Triangle Factory has put out to pasture after announcing its long-running shooter Hyper Dash will shut down in November.

It is also not the first in-development ‘shelving’ of a VR game this year, with The Binary Mill announcing the same for Survive The Night a short time after its public reveal.
