Bungie has outlined plans to bring previously removed Destiny 2 content back into the game and develop new content for 2027 after announcing a renewed commitment to the franchise.
Bungie has published a new content timeline for Destiny 2, including plans to restore previously removed material and develop an update with new content in 2027. The timeline follows the studio’s decision to resume work on the franchise after previously announcing that support would end with a final update in June.
The first phase of the plan is an unvaulting of Destiny 2 content. Bungie’s outline covers campaigns, downloadable content stories, raids, locations and additional material that had been removed from the live game. The studio has not presented the unvaulting as a single content category, but as a broader effort to bring back content from across the game’s history.
A change to the previously announced plan
Bungie had previously planned to release a Destiny 2 expansion called Shattered Cycle in 2026. The studio later announced that it would stop supporting the game after a final update scheduled for June. That plan has since changed, with Bungie returning to active development on the franchise.
The renewed commitment follows months of player requests for Destiny 2 to continue. The response included calls for a new entry in the series during a Sony State of Play showcase, where requests for Destiny 3 became prominent in the event’s chat. Bungie announced in September that it would resume work on the franchise.
Josh Dean, who authored Bungie’s latest post, provided additional details about what the studio plans to do next. The timeline identifies the restoration of existing Destiny 2 content as the initial step before the 2027 update with new material.
What Bungie has announced
- Unvaulting: Bungie plans to bring back campaigns, downloadable content stories, raids, locations and other previously removed content.
- 2027 update: The studio has announced an update containing new Destiny 2 content.
- Franchise support: Bungie announced in September that work on the franchise would resume after the earlier plan to end Destiny 2 support.
The timeline also follows the release of the Monument of Triumph update, which Bungie’s announcement described as one of the largest updates in Destiny 2’s history. Players supported the game and Bungie after that update, according to the studio’s account of the franchise’s recent developments.
Bungie’s latest plans place the restoration of Destiny 2’s removed content ahead of the new material scheduled for 2027. The announcement marks a reversal of the earlier support decision and establishes the unvaulting effort as the next major step for the live game.
