September is coming to an end, closing off a ridiculously busy month for new games. That won’t let up in October. Gears of War: E-Day, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, and more are making for another crowded month.
Buried in that list of high-profile games are also several exciting indies that deserve to be on your radar too. That includes some follow-ups to 2020s cult classics, a new multiplayer game for the co-op crowd, and a trippy action game that looks like the perfect complement to Control Resonant. Virtue and a Sledgehammer
Virtue and a Sledgehammer is the latest game from Deconstructeam, the developer behind 2023’s The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood. It has quite the premise: You head back to your hometown and destroy it with a sledgehammer. It promises to be an emotional and rage-filled story with plenty of catharsis. It will be released Oct. 27.

Penguin Colony
If you played 2020’s excellent Umurangi Generation, you know why developer Origame Digital’s follow-up, Penguin Colony, is a big deal. But you don’t need to know the developer’s pedigree to get excited about the year’s strangest game: a lo-fi Lovecraftian horror story about penguins marching into madness.

Truckful
There’s a new Crazy Taxi game coming soon, but you can scratch your chaotic delivery game itch on Oct. 9 with Truckful. In this indie by developer MythicOwl, you’ll guide a pickup truck around a small town as you deliver packages and solve mysteries. Consider it a more lighthearted version of The Wages of Fear.

Danchi Days
Following last year’s fantastic Angeline Era, publisher Analgesic Productions has another promising project ready to go. Danchi Days tells a slice-of-life story set in a quaint Japanese village circa the 2000s. As a 12-year-old taking care of your grandmother, you’ll befriend neighbors, play minigames, and attend a summer festival in what looks like a sweet adventure.

Deep Dish Dungeon
Your next co-op obsession could be right around the corner. Deep Dish Dungeon, launching on Oct. 13, is a dungeon crawler where you’ll craft, cook, and solve puzzles either solo or with up to two other players. As Big Walk taught us this summer, getting lost is more fun with friends, isn’t it?

Anomalith
Control Resonant isn’t the only third-person action game built around mind-bending liminal spaces and supernatural anomalies coming this fall. Anomalith pulls some similar tricks in a trippy sci-fi shooter built from anime influences. It’s looking like a well-timed chaser to Remedy’s latest game.
