While some deem virtual reality a dead platform, hardcore fans still haven’t given up hope. In fact, one Stardew Valley player known as GingasVR has spent the last few months working on an immersive mod for the farming sim that totally transforms the game.
The mod, which is still in progress, might tempt some of you to brush the dust off your old VR headset. Everything works as expected, but the camera and more action-oriented gameplay almost make the cozy game seem like a totally new experience. These aren’t flat sprites on a 2D background — everything is in a 3D space. The mod allows you to swap between perspectives seamlessly, which means you can streamline grindy portions of the game while still being able to spice up things like combat and mining.
And if you don’t have a VR headset lying around, don’t worry. You can still use the mod to experience Pelican Town in its full 3D glory.
“This mod acts as an overlay and can procedurally create 3D voxel effects based on the game’s sprites,” the description reads.
If you try it, be aware that some areas of the game may load strangely. The mod isn’t done, and Stardew Valley wasn’t programmed to be played this way. Installation should be easy, as GingasVR tried to make a lightweight download that is compatible with other major mods. If players aren’t feeling it, the mod can easily be uninstalled, the creator promises. So far, it’s mostly been met with awe from the Stardew Valley community.
