It happened with The Heroes Journey. It happened with Turtle WoW. And now, it looks like it’s going to be attempted by Project Ascension, the World of Warcraft rogue server that’s shutting its doors this week: The volunteer devs of the project are going to make their own MMORPG.
Information on what this game will be isn’t available yet, only the fact that it will apparently be called Ascension. The only other firm details shared in the Discord announcement are the fact that user accounts will be maintained, the rogue server’s launcher will be updated to fire up the new MMO once it becomes playable, and cash shop currency used in Project Ascension will be credited to accounts to buy “exclusive founders cosmetics.”
Beyond that, Ascension’s devs promise that “there is a lot of work already done” on the new game and players “[fans] won’t have to wait through years of just teasers and concept art.” The first step is the release of a small opt-in alpha build to get early testing data and feedback, then build out from there. Details on when that will happen are promised soon™.
