Who is Yujiro Hanma and why he's the perfect fit for Tekken 8

Some martial arts franchises pride themselves on their gritty realism. Others embrace the flamboyant side of the fighting world with larger-than-life characters. And then there is Baki, where muscular men train by pulling helicopters or crushing diamonds with their hands. Just like the Tekken franchise, Baki built its success on combining realistic martial arts roots with charismatic characters who bend the laws of reality; that’s why Yujiro Hanma coming to Tekken 8 as season 3’s guest character makes perfect sense.

The announcement trailer, shared during the Combo Breaker 2026 event, unfortunately does not contain any gameplay, as the character will not be added to Tekken 8 until sometime in “early 2027,” but there’s still plenty of reason to get excited for fans of Bandai Namco’s fighting game series. Known as “the strongest creature on Earth” and “the Ogre,” Yujiro Hanma is one of the main characters in the Baki series, created by Keisuke Itagaki, which includes many connected manga and their anime adaptation, available on Netflix.

Baki began as the story of a martial arts prodigy boy training relentlessly to defeat his monstrous father. That simple premise evolved over the years by including a memorable cast of characters that goes from martial arts masters to a prehistoric man and even a resurrected Musashi Miyamoto. Baki never shied away from embracing its weirdness, but the story’s core for a long time remained the conflict between Baki and his father, Yujiro. While their fight, seen at the end of season 2 of Netflix’s Baki Hanma, concluded technically with Baki’s victory through showing his father imaginary food, Yujiro remains unmatched in the series in terms of power and pure swag. He even made his world’s equivalent of Donald Trump piss his pants.

Yujiro Hanma will be a perfect fit for Tekken. While the series can be pretty realistic in adapting real-world martial arts into its movesets, it stood out through its cast of colorful characters and an epic storyline built on a bloody family feud, just like Baki. The only question is how Yujiro’s unique fighting style will be translated into the game. Despite being a master of all martial arts, the Ogre does not use a specific style: he relies on his overwhelming power to crush opponents with a single attack, usually. It will be interesting to see how Tekken 8 will adapt Yujiro’s most peculiar moves, like the one where he turns his opponent into a living nunchuck.

More than anything else, I’m excited to see Yujiro interact with characters from the Tekken franchise. Imagine a meeting between the Ogre and Kazuya Mishima: will the planet break under the sheer weight of their aura farming? When Yujiro stands in the same room as Paul Phoenix, just how high will the testosterone levels go?

Itagaki poured into Baki his knowledge and passion for training and martial arts, and an unhinged talent for portraying cool, strong men. Yujiro is the pinnacle of that process, transcending the boundaries of manga and anime to become a popular feature of internet culture. In fact, Tekken 8 got a nice boost on the top sellers chart on Steam after the announcement. I struggle to think of a better fit for a game with fighting bears, devils, angels, and a living training dummy.
