Street Fighter 6 just got its long-awaited Aug. 3 update, and the fan response has not been pretty. The short version is that the patch barely shakes up the game’s core systems, while making strange nerf and buff decisions for much of the roster.

For those who don’t play Street Fighter 6, Capcom has taken a very conservative approach to its balance updates, rarely changing the things outside new character releases. Once a year, the game receives a “major balance patch,” usually timed to avoid interfering with the Capcom Pro Tour competitive circuit. Because of these long delays between major alterations, there tends to be a great deal of anticipation around the yearly patch.

If there’s a main grievance with the latest update, it’s that it doesn’t alter Street Fighter 6‘s increasingly divisive core systems. Specifically, there are no changes to Drive Rush and throw loops. Drive Rush lets every character close the distance by quickly charging forward. It has been criticized for making gameplay overly aggressive compared to previous Street Fighter games, as many characters have very quick Drive Rushes that are difficult to stop.

Throw loops are a technique that lets certain characters repeatedly throw their opponent in the corner. While throw loops aren’t inescapable, they put the defender in a disadvantageous position that can easily lead to a loss. It doesn’t help that they are boring to execute and spectate. Many players have complained about both Drive Rush and throw loops for more than three years now, but Capcom has barely made any changes in response.

On top of the lack of significant system changes, many players are flabbergasted by the character buffs. Perhaps the most talked-about example is that Capcom made Ryu even better. Between his high damage and oppressive offense, he was already one of the best characters in the game, but he received improvements to one of his strongest attacks, Solar Plexus Strike. The developers wrote in the patch notes that they thought this would “make the move more balanced.” Another dominant character, Sagat, received a mixture of nerfs and buffs that some think won’t negatively affect him. M. Bison, one of the most hated characters in the game, received buffs.

Meanwhile, other top-tier characters like Ed and Mai seem to have been severely nerfed. As for the rest of the cast, many characters received tiny updates that don’t seem likely to impact much. Not much seems to have changed at a high level, with the most significant character alterations seemingly being for the worse. Many are guessing the patch will drive more players to new fighting games like Avatar Legends and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls.

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that the update coincided with the release of an all-new character, Yasmine, who players seem to be enjoying. She’s a fighter from the Philippines looking to find her brother, and fans have been taken by her stylish playstyle and wholesome relationship with her idol Manon.

While it will take time to see how Street Fighter 6’s latest update shakes out, the early reactions are not good. Yasmine’s release may be enough to bring some players back, but at least right now, her debut has been overshadowed by general disappointment with the game’s stagnation.
