'Skyrim' Mod Makers Wage War Over Competing Ambitious Graphics Mods

In early August 2026, a mod called Community Shaders stunned the Skyrim fandom with its impressive graphical features. While the mod has elated Elder Scrolls fans on PC, its existence has angered a high-profile creator behind a popular rival mod. Now, the creators of the new Skyrim mod are facing the possibility of future legal action.

Over the years, Skyrim has seen a number of impressive graphical overhauls. Many of them are built on the framework provided by Enhanced Natural Beauty, a mod that enables visual presets that can boost environmental details. ENB can add options like depth of field and improve how Skyrim renders elements like water and fire.

While the results are impressive, ENB comes with some major caveats. ENB acts like a wrapper over Skyrim, but it does not improve the game on an engine level — making it a taxing mod that requires a high-end computer for the best results. The other asterisk, at least for some Skyrim players, is that ENB creator Boris Vorontsov is a controversial figure who is known for his spats with other modders as well as what some consider to be regressive political views.

For years, ENB was the king of graphical mods. Community Shaders provided a decent open-source alternative, but it couldn’t quite match the results of ENB. That is, until this August, when a new update was released for CS that added support for popular ENB presets without the need to use the controversial mod. Critically, CS offers improvements like particle shaders and volumetric rays that can be leveraged by mid-range computer hardware, not just top-of-the-line PCs. The new mod also offers better performance and flexibility, but without needing to support a “problematic” figure.

A few weeks after its high-profile release, the creators of Community Shaders were served a DMCA notice by Vorontsov, ENB’s developer. Doodlum, a central CS figure, shared a series of documents on the mod’s Discord channel with Vorontsov’s takedown claim. In it, Vorontsov alleges that Community Shaders uses Patreon to fund and distribute software that infringes on copyrighted material. To prove this, Vorontsov provided a screenshot of a conversation where a different creator of an ENB-related mod stated they did not give Community Shaders permission to reverse engineer its code.

Vorontsov’s claim hinges on a recent software license that he tacked onto ENB posted days after the Community Shaders update in question was uploaded. Ironically, the DMCA request also suggests Boris’ own code uses a library that requires attribution that is not included in ENB. The DMCA further alleged that, beyond proprietary concerns, the move was motivated by “extreme” harassment campaigns that were encouraging the creator to take his own life.

After the DMCA was filed, Patreon informed the developers of the new mod that the platform would restrict the distribution of the offending material. The Patreon is still available, but its owners were told by Patreon they could be banned if another DMCA was received against Community Shaders. Though the DMCA may not hold merit in future legal proceedings, Community Shader devs say that they need to seek legal counsel to counter the claim. Since then, the project has begun accepting donations for the proceedings. As of this writing, the Community Shaders Patreon generates just over $500 a month.

It’s unclear if the exchange could turn into a full-blown lawsuit, but for now, the Skyrim modding fandom is in shock — and rallying in support of Community Shaders.
