Razer launches "the world's thinnest glass gaming mouse mat," because glass isn't dangerous enough already

Razer‘s edge is exceedingly thin with its latest release, the Razer Atlas Pro glass gaming mouse mat. As the world’s thinnest glass gaming mouse pad, it takes the current craze of reviving the glass mouse mat and cranks up the danger a few notches.

Not that Razer would admit to any such concerns about the toughness of its new contender for the best gaming mouse mat. Indeed, its tempered glass construction, Razer says, is made “without sacrificing stability or durability,” despite being less than half the thickness of many alternatives.

The advantage of this thinness, according to Razer, is that it “creates a continuous, comfortable interaction point, strengthening the connection between mouse movement and control.” That might sound like peak marketing speak, but generally, that does tally with the feedback we’ve seen from gamers when it comes to wanting mouse pads to be as slim and unobtrusive as possible.

To help protect the incredibly thin glass and to stop it sliding around, the whole mat has a rubber layer underneath it, which is still thin enough to bring the total mat thickness up to just 1.9mm. That compares to 3mm for the new Corsair MM Glass or 3.5mm for the popular Wallhack SP range.

Interestingly, while some old glass mouse pads were literally just etched glass on their top surface, Razer has still used a “2 µm micro etched texture” but has also then used a protective coating that makes it easier to wipe down and results in a “smooth, low-friction glide favored by FPS and aim-training players.”

The surface is also rated to 9H on the Mohs hardness scale, which, as you’d expect for glass, means it’s not going to scratch from normal desk detritus hitting it.

Available in shops and on Razer’s store, the Razer Atlas Pro comes in black and white, measures 500 x 400 mm – typical for a large mouse mat – and is priced at a distinctly premium $129.99 / £129.99 / €139.99.
