Project Helix Will Receive a “Closer Look” on May 7th in First Xbox Game Dev Update

When it comes to console reveals, you’d probably think of Xbox’s own dedicated showcase or even the stage of The Game Awards. However, Project Helix was simply announced after extensive rumors – no release window, nothing, and only the assurance that it would play your existing Xbox and PC games.

Other tidbits have emerged since, but it seems Microsoft is revealing more in its first Xbox Game Dev Update on May 7th. Hosted by general manager of portfolio and programs, Chris Charla, and VP of next generation, Jason Ronald, it will offer a “closer look” at Project Helix and “what it represents for the future of Xbox.”

However, you probably shouldn’t expect a full-fledged reveal. The duo will apparently discuss all the details from GDC, where Xbox revealed development kits and later confirmed that they would ship to studios in 2027. Nevertheless, there’s a tease about the console creating “new opportunities” to “optimize build workflows, improve performance, and iterate more efficiently,” so perhaps we’ll learn more during the update.

In the meantime, rumors claim that Project Helix is still targeting a worldwide launch during the 2027 Holiday season, reportedly competing with Sony’s PlayStation 6 (and the alleged handheld variant). While pricing and availability remain up in the air, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma indicated that rising memory costs could impact both.

“As we think about being where the world plays, we will take that into consideration. So we’re not ready to share a launch timeline right now. The world’s pretty dynamic.” But as outlined when Microsoft Gaming rebranded to Xbox, the focus is on “what’s in our control, build a great console to play great games, including your PC games.”
