While the survivalbox genre is packed with post-apocalyptic themes, we don’t get a whole lot of MMORPGs that follow the themes that MMOs like Fallen Earth laid down during the genre boom in the late aughts. So with that in mind, we present one to you that popped up on Gamespress today, though it comes with a caveat: Afterglow is a mobile MMO, and it’s aiming directly at casual gamers. Here’s the pitch.
“Afterglow is a mobile sandbox MMORPG set in a post-apocalyptic world with a 1980s theme. Set 77 years after a global nuclear war, players take the role of a refugee who has arrived in the American Southwest region. While trying to survive, they will encounter mysterious artifacts and phenomena that have reshaped the Wasteland. It’s an MMORPG designed for busy people who can no longer commit their time to traditional MMOs but want to experience meaningful progression, deep mechanics, and social bonds. It features async mechanics, turn-based combat, skill-based progression, player-driven economy and ethical free-to-play monetization with no pay-to-win.”
Yeah, you read that right: The PR promises “ethical game design,” which studio Shadow Council – an indie team from Australia – defines as “no pay-to-win mechanics, no manipulative timers or artificial scarcity. Subscription unlocks full skill progression.” The announcement also talks up offline progression and the PvP system, which basically sounds like Albion Online, with some safe zones and some zones where you will be murdered and stripped clean.
The game is officially in open-access beta on both Android and iOS as of today; the full launch, which’ll come after a beta wipe, is expected next month.
