Meta Is Working On A Virtual Cinema Environment For Quest & VR Glasses

Datamining and findings across Horizon OS 2.9 PTC (Public Test Channel) suggest that Meta is working on a virtual cinema environment for Quest headsets and the upcoming VR Glasses.

Over the past year, Meta has made a large effort to decouple the company’s VR efforts from the Worlds social platform. The company emphasized this when it explicitly stated that the two would become separate platforms, and around a month later they expressed plans for the newer Horizon Engine-based Worlds to be removed from VR devices. This all came after the far-reaching layoffs and reorganization of the VR and Horizon teams within Reality Labs in January 2026.

One of the removed Worlds was Meta’s VR events space, called Events Arena. This was introduced with the rollout of Horizon OS v81 PTC and allowed users to view media such as concerts with other users on a massive or surrounding screen in a theater-like environment.

Earlier this year, test events titled after classic films such as Jurassic Park were visible on the Worlds platform. Around the same time, dataminer and programmer Nori found evidence that the company was also testing a version of Events Arena designed more like a standard cinema space. This suggests that Meta may have been preparing to build a sort of social theater on the platform, similar to apps such as Bigscreen.

Now, with Events Arena closed and Meta’s VR efforts having diverged from Worlds, the company appears to be working on a new cinema environment built directly into the operating system.

Strings and assets found in Horizon OS 2.9 PTC reference a “Cinema” environment for viewing media content. Dataminer and security researcher ToastConcern was able to access an alpha build of the environment, and I managed to get it running on a Quest 3S.

The displayed app name for the environment is Theater Home. It features a large home cinema-style room with high resolution textures and baked-in lighting. Firmware functions suggest that rather than being a traditional VR Home environment, it is selected from the Control Bar of the specific window you want to view on the center screen using a button labeled “Theater.” The system then switches to the environment, and switches you back to the traditional VR Home when you choose to exit the cinema.

Strings found in Horizon OS 2.9 PTC suggest that this environment will also support a new feature known as Dynamic Ambience internally. References found in Horizon OS 2.6 and 2.7 describe it as adding a rendered “halo” of light around focused theater panels.

In practice, this would likely be similar to the media lighting features available on visionOS and in the numerous premium media player apps on the Meta Horizon Store, or real-world TV LED sync systems such as the Philips Hue Sync Box. A colored glow effect would appear around the currently focused window, with dynamic animations during media playback.

Example of how the Dynamic Ambience feature might look, using the player lighting in the app Spatial TV.

It remains to be seen when Theater Home may ship. The current build is tagged as v210, which suggests it could ship sometime after Horizon OS 2.9 moves to stable. It may even be released alongside the new in-development VR Home environment, codenamed Loma Home.

It also remains to be seen whether content in the cinema environment will be social or shareable. Meta Horizon TV and YouTube’s co-watching features were removed from Horizon OS as part of the move to the Loft VR Home Environment, which began with the rollout of v81 PTC. Meta’s planned replacement co-presence features were then canceled in conjunction with the operating system’s decoupling from Worlds, with the company instead choosing to concentrate social VR efforts on the realistic avatar-focused Hologram calling.

This all comes as Meta’s recent content focus has centered on integrating existing media and streaming platforms into Horizon OS ahead of the company’s upcoming VR Glasses, which support the Dolby Vision HDR format and are the first VR product to be IMAX Enhanced certified.

The company is using the tagline “Cinema. Computer. Console.” to market the device, and this virtual cinema environment appears to be part of the ongoing software efforts to better align with that product positioning.
