While anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 continues to skyrocket, even if it only supports 30 FPS on day one for Xbox Series X/S and PS5, some hope it could come to other platforms later. And no, not just PC, which seems about a given with Rockstar, but the Nintendo Switch 2, especially after rumors that it was testing a port.
However, not everyone is exactly enthusiastic about it. Jérémy Hartvick, a former Rockstar designer who worked on Grand Theft Auto 6 until 2020, doesn’t believe it “even makes sense.”
Speaking to Kiwi Talks in a members-only interview on YouTube (transcription via Dexerto, he said, “I don’t believe it even makes sense, because I’m not sure the audience for GTA 6 is so much the audience for the Switch. If you’re a GTA fan, you would probably buy a console on which GTA will come out.”
While the open-world title could be a venerable system seller, a port that doesn’t offer the same experience as other platforms might be a different story. “Does it make sense for you to go out of your way to probably deliver a subpar experience, because it does not run exactly the same when you know anyone will buy a PS5 to get your game? No.”
It’s not “totally ludicrous,” per Hartvick, especially when factoring in streaming. However, he believes that Rockstar could always bring the game to phones. “If they put their mind to it, you could be playing GTA 6 on your phone because that technology exists and it has been proven.”
Rockstar Games hasn’t really outlined its plans for other platforms, though it brought Red Dead Redemption to Switch 2 last December. Obviously, porting the former would be a different matter entirely, especially considering the level of fidelity, but hey, never say never.
Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19th for Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Besides the $80 Standard Edition and $100 Ultimate Edition, there’s also a $400 Collector’s Edition with physical goodies based on the fictional TV show, Macca the Gator. Head here for more details.
