Like an Oblivion gate terrorizing Tamriel, AI slop has come to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Since the advent of LLM-generated “vibe coding,” Skyrim players have found themselves deluged with new mods promising exciting features and cutting-edge graphics. The thumbnails for these new mods are slick, and the descriptions always confidently assert that they’ll turn Skyrim into a new game. Once the mod is downloaded, though, fans quickly discover that it’s too good to be true — if they can get it working at all.
Skyrim fans have spent the last year calling the influx of AI mods an “invasion” that’s become inescapable, even in the world of sexy mods. For example, there is a mod that generates naked 3D characters that appear during loading screens. It’s bottom of the barrel stuff, but for mod creators trying to gain their footing, it’s also a nightmare. How do you compete with a sexy thumbnail that depicts something impossible?
“I released a follower mod with months of work and over 1000 lines of dialogue recorded by me,” one Skyrim modder wrote in January 2026. “In the same hour I released it, someone released a follower mod with 52 lines of ai dialogue and she was half naked in the thumbnail, it had 4 times as many downloads as mine. Shit’s rough.”
In another instance, a mod that sexualizes a World of Warcraft character was so successful, it was voted as one of the platform’s “mod of the month.” The author used tools to generate the character’s voice and develop scripts. To the mod creator’s credit, they say they’ve gained a better understanding of how to make mods over time. They also claim that none of the actual dialogue was generated by an LLM. “I would never let AI ruin my space goat’s personality,” they wrote, before admitting that they used ChatGPT to understand Skyrim‘s lore.
“Those turned out to be hilariously incorrect, so never again,” they added.
The problem, which goes well beyond sexy mods, isn’t a new one. Back in 2023, concern around the issue prompted hosting platform Nexus Mods to clarify its rules around AI-generated content. At the time, Nexus Mods stated that it would allow AI mods, so long as that content did not violate copyright. The platform also allows authors to disclose AI-generated content through tags, but users have to click through the mod to see them. Mod creators can also forgo using the tag.
“In general, we’re really excited about the potential these new technologies offer to content creators to enrich their mod content but at the same time, we’re aware that with great power comes great responsibility,” the post reads.
As tools have improved, the issue has become harder to ignore. Since AI tools made coding significantly easier, some Skyrim fans have turned into prolific creators who pump out mods. One notorious Skyrim modder has reportedly generated dozens of mods a week throughout 2026 — though only some survive in the long term.
Savvy users may not see the Skyrim situation as a true dilemma. Some find it easy to pinpoint AI-generated images, or to block disliked creators. Still, as the internet as a whole becomes a landfill of AI slop, the perpetual vigilance is exhausting. Creators who use these tools are also less likely to be able to troubleshoot issues with users, as they don’t understand what they’ve made.
Inevitably, allowing such content also helps it become normalized. In the case of the risqué AI-generated World of Warcraft follower, the creation got more votes for the platform’s monthly award than most mods ever do, period. Some mods under the AI tag have millions of downloads.
Perhaps the biggest irony here is that some AI Skyrim mod creators are so protective, their mod pages warn users against reuploading, modifying, or otherwise using their original work.
