The fifth chapter of Deltarune, the indie RPG from Undertale creator Toby Fox, is finally out. This brings the story one step closer to the conclusion of the episodic game that released its first installment in 2018. That doesn’t mean the team is taking any breaks. In an update to the game’s Steam FAQ page, of all places, Fox revealed that development has begun on Chapter 6 and when we can expect to play it.

Delatarune Chapter 5: Festival Day was released on June 24 as a free update for anyone who owns the base game. To coincide with the latest installment, the developer updated the game’s Steam page to answer some expected fan questions. The first is whether Chapter 5 marks an end to Deltarune‘s development. “Nope!” says the developer, “The story is still continuing, and more Chapters will be added for free over time.”

As for when exactly Chapter 6 will release, “We are aiming for a 2027 release!” Fox says in the FAQ, “Meanwhile, we will be periodically releasing information on the development progress of the game.”

The episodic nature of Deltarune has been the source of much theorizing from fans over the many years the game has been in development. The chapter select screen for the game has always shown seven chapters. If that is the case, then there will only be two more installments before fans finally get to see the long-awaited conclusion to Deltarune. This itself has been teased quite a bit, as the game’s Steam page notes it will have, “only 1 ending…?” Fox’s previous game, Undertale, famously had multiple endings depending on how the player interacted with the game world during a playthrough. Of course, there are some fans who continue to question the truth of the chapter count, suggesting even more could be in the cards. That mainly comes from the discovery of unused files and assets in the game that make reference to the eighth, ninth, and tenth chapters.

The wait between Deltarune chapters has, at times, been grueling. While the first chapter was released in 2018, Chapter 2 finally dropped in 2021, followed by Chapter 3 and 4 getting a simultaneous release in 2025. With Chapter 5′s recent release, however, and Chapter 6 slated for next year (fingers crossed it does not get delayed), it seems like development is more on track for a consistent schedule now. If all goes well, that could mean Deltarune will release it’s seventh and final chapter in 2028, a decade after the game started. That is, of course, if we are to believe there are only seven chapters.

Deltarune is available on Mac, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC.
