We do love some Halloween events in already running MMORPGs and multiplayer games, but we also love it when a new game comes out that just wears its spookytime heart on its sleeve. That’s certainly something that can be said about Hunt or Be Haunted, an in-development asymmetrical multiplayer title from Cryptic Studios, a developer that should need no introduction ’round these parts.
“Team up with up to five investigators using professional gear to track the paranormal—or take control of the entity and hunt them down. Watch your sanity, trust your team, and survive the darkness.”
As that blurb points out, this 6v1 game sees teams of players attempt to track down and identify the thing that’s haunting them, all while managing sanity and fear among themselves, while the player operating as the entity tries to spook the whole team before they’re identified. If you’ve ever played Phasmophobia, you can pretty much get this game’s general idea.
The major differences are that this title boasts larger multi-level maps, a wide assortment of tools for hunters to utilize, and the ability to play in single-player if one so chooses, all within an Unreal Engine 5-built title. The game is currently in very early development as the devs work on ironing out base mechanics and improving tools, though it is offering up playtest space for those who are interested. Signups are being handled specifically through Discord, and it appears that testing is under NDA. Still, if you do like your creepy games any time of the year, it can be wishlisted on Steam.
