We’re not sure how the word “cozy” and the concepts of action combat and PvP can blend, but that’s the attempt being made by our latest new MMORPG highlight, evidently. This is EmberQuest, a new title from the sole developer of Faded Scroll Games that looks to hit a few boxes for sandbox fans while still being a more approachable sort of experience.
Described on its Steam page and an introductory post on Reddit as a “cozy lite MMO,” EmberQuest has many of the usual trimmings one expects in our genre such as questing, open world PvP zones and PvP events, world bosses, various tradeskills, and PvE activities. Combat is physics-driven and active, where positioning, deflecting, and pushing are all utilized by the game’s four classes. And while it calls itself an MMO, server sizes are being limited to 100 players max to maintain “a ‘small-town atmosphere’ where people actually recognize each other and players can become famous, or infamous.” Which is perhaps where the “cozy” part comes in to play?
The game will be arriving to Steam on Thursday, October 15th, as a free-to-play title, though an optional subscription can be purchased to receive benefits such as bank sorting/filtering, the ability to earn spin tokens through quests that can be spent to try for random cosmetics, and additional action bar and bank space — something that replies to the Reddit thread were very quick to point out as a pretty awful idea. We also would can’t ignore the fact that this game already existed as a blockchain game, though obviously its Steam version appears to have those aspects cut. More details can be found on Steam and Reddit if you’re still curious all the same.
