As our regular readers know full well by now, we were deeply frustrated with Amazon Games’ closure of New World, an MMORPG that might have never cracked the vaunted Big Five, but also appeared to have found its stride just before Amazon pulled the rug out from beneath it. Well, we have something of a mixed blessing of an announcement: Some of those devs are back and have formed a new studio.
The developer is called Steel Strix Studio and it describes itself as a team of former New World developers, with their most recent work being on the Nighthaven expansion. “We were proud of that expansion, and we had a lot of fun making it. Now we are making a game of our own,” the site’s blurb reads.
As for what this new game is, Steel Strix flat-out says that it’s not an MMO, but a “co-op action combat game with innovative multiplayer mechanics and a story by Chris Avellone,” whose name is most closely associated with games such as Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and Planescape Torment among others.
All told, fans might have to wait a while for more details on this multiplayer title, as Steel Strix notes that it’s in early stages and plans to begin internal testing soon. Until then, there is a newsletter one can sign up for on the studio’s site if you’re so inclined.
