Next generation of AMD and Nvidia GPUs rumored for 2028 launch

Well-known leaker Kepler_L2 made the claims in a forum thread on Anandtech, claiming that the only new consumer GPU we’ll see from either firm in 2027 will be from AMD, with the launch of one RDNA 5-based card codenamed the ‘AT2’. The rest of AMD’s next generation RDNA 5 graphics card lineup however, along with Nvidia’s RTX 60 series, won’t be arriving until 2028, according to the post. As with any rumor like this, we’d recommend taking it with a significant pinch of salt, but the timeline does seem to add up considering the relative official silence we’ve had on these GPU generations so far.

The timing lines up with an ongoing supply squeeze on GPUs, with GDDR7 memory continually being prioritised towards AI accelerators rather than consumer GPUs. With that in mind, it would make sense why both AMD and Nvidia are holding out a little longer before bringing their latest cards to market.

If this claim does turn out to be true, which we should get a clearer idea on as we head towards 2027, it marks a significant lengthening of product cycles from both team red and team green. Between the RTX 30 and 40 generations we had a time gap of around two years, and it was a similar story for the time gap between the RTX 40 and 50 series cards.

Of course, we’ve had little to nothing in the way of official information regarding these GPU lineups, either from AMD or Nvidia. While 2028 feels like a long time away, it seems pretty unlikely that rising component prices driven by AI server demand will have been resolved by then – if at all. Official pricing of these cards, once confirmed, could be significantly higher than the ‘recommended’ retail prices currently set for the latest generation of cards – which, may we remind you, are already being listed by third-party sellers way above their official prices.
