Since the previous instalment, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, released over a decade ago, the rumour mill for the fourth instalment in the popular RPG series has already been spinning for a number of years – with things really heating up once CD Projekt RED confirmed the existence of The Witcher 4 back in early 2022.

With Gamescom kicking off this week, a new video posted by CD Projekt RED addresses a question many fans have been asking: Will The Witcher 4 be shown at Gamescom? The simple answer to that is no, but joint CEO of CD Projekt RED, Michał Nowakowski, did bring some other crucial information to the table about the next instalment in the series. After speculation about a release date for The Witcher 4, Michał confirmed that the developers are targeting a 2028 release window for the next game, urging fans to ‘let the team cook’ before its ‘biggest, boldest and most ambitious game to date’ is ready.

In The Witcher 4, players will step into the boots of Ciri, taking over from Geralt as the main character, and will be powered by Unreal Engine 5, bringing new levels of graphical fidelity to the franchise.

While we won’t see any gameplay of The Witcher 4 at Gamescom beyond the technical demo we already saw at last year’s State of Unreal event, there’s still something to look forward to with CD Projekt Red’s presence in Cologne this year. The developers have confirmed that we’ll find out more about the third major expansion pack for The Witcher 3, ‘Songs of the Past’, which is set to release in 2027 for Windows, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, and allow players to take on the monster-slaying role of Geralt of Rivia once again. That’ll fill your time nicely, if The Witcher 4 remains on track for a 2028 launch.
