Is there room between the honest-to-goodness MMORPG and the lesser co-op game for a third category? “Somewhat massively games?” We’ve been trying to figure that one out for years, and in the meantime, a new title called Scramble Knights Online slid right into that space and set up shop.

Studio Funktronic Labs at one point was pitching and testing the game on Steam as a battle royale title called Scramble Knights Royale, but now the team has pivoted, announcing that it’s heading “in a new direction” and transforming the game into a multiplayer adventure RPG that’s “not quite an MMO but also more than a co-op game.”

The new version still looks and sounds cute with that bubbly chibi aesthetic stamped all over it. “‘Adventure with Friends’ was always at the core of what we wanted to build,” the studio now insists. “Think of every quest as a unique Zelda-inspired, bite-sized adventure. Deliver a chicken across a dangerous canyon filled with rock-slinging crabs, help a citizen clear shrubs from their yard, or enter a dungeon to challenge an epic boss fight.”

Scramble Knights Online is aiming for an early access release this fall with a beta already live now through October. The studio said that it’ll be a buy-to-play product costing between $15 and $20.
