BAFTA Award-winning actor Jennifer English, known for Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has announced she’s stepping away from Tides of Annihilation. Developed by Eclipse Glow Games, she played the protagonist, Gwen.

In a recent Instagram story (screenshot by Genki on Twitter), English said, “Recently, I’ve found myself needing to slow down and reassess the commitments I’ve taken on. After careful thought, I’ve realised I need to take time to rest and properly look after my mental and physical health. With that in mind, I’ve made the difficult – yet personally necessary – decision to step away from the project as it moves into its next phase.”

Her role has since been recast, with English stating that she introduced the development to a “very talented actor” who she believed “is a wonderful fit for Gwen.” “Having seen her passion, talent, and care for the craft, I’m excited for players to hear her interpretation of the role and can’t wait for players to experience what she brings to Gwen.” She also confirmed that she will still be involved as an advisor, though the extent of her role remains unknown.

“I wish the entire team nothing but success, and I’ll be cheering them on as they continue bringing the game to life.”

The news comes after Eclipse Glow announced that it would bring Tides of Annihilation to Gamescom, allowing attendees to go hands-on with the hack-and-slash action-adventure before launch. While the contents of this demo are also unknown, its recent teaser trailer indicated a mix of combat, boss fights, and exploration. The appearance would seemingly kick off other hands-on events, though further details have yet to be revealed.

There’s currently no release date for Tides of Annihilation, though English’s bit about it moving “to the next phase” could mean that changes at some point. Time will tell, so stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, you can check out the team’s latest progress here. It announced a partnership with Nvidia and Epic Games to help improve performance, especially in more visually taxing scenes.

I am sad she had to step away but I hope she gets better soon and can come back strong for her next role.
