Sega’s Super Game Project Has Been Cancelled

During its recent earnings report, Sega announced that its planned Super Game project has been cancelled. The project was originally unveiled back in 2021. The company had previously stated that it was “aimed at online and global markets” and that it would be a combination of multiple projects.

In 2022, executive vice president Shuji Utsumi revealed a few details about it, revealing that multiple titles were being developed as part of its Super Game project. He had also noted that this supposed Super Game would go “beyond the framework of conventional games.”

“We are developing multiple titles within the framework of ‘Super Game’, and although it depends on each title, there is no doubt that it will become an interactive title that goes beyond the framework of conventional games,” Utsumi said at the time. “For example, in the past, people who played games were called gamers, but now watching games is a culture, and those people may be called gamers as well. I think there is great potential in the relationship between the people who play the game and the people who watch it.”

No other details about this Super Game had been revealed, however, which should make its cancellation come as no surprise. In the meantime, the company is continuing its efforts to bring back its classic collection of gaming IPs into the limelight. Just last month, Sega kicked off the Sega Universe with the tagline “No old, stay gold.”

While what the Sega Universe will entail outside of new merchandise remains to be seen, the company has confirmed that Fantasy Zone, OutRun, Streets of Rage, Rent A Hero, Guardian Heroes, NiGHTS, Dynamite Deka, Sakura Wars, and SGGG are part of this initiative. This collection of games spans all the way back from old-school arcade machines to the company’s final console, the Dreamcast.

When it comes to some of its other older IP, the company had announced in 2023 that it was working on new entries in franchises like Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Golden Axe. Since this announcement, there has been a new Shinobi game, dubbed Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, which you can read more details about in our review.

As for its other projects, Sega has largely maintained its silence. However, back in December 2023, the company had confirmed that its new Jet Set Radio title will be open-world. Rumors have also indicated that the company is working on a remake of the original Jet Set Radio as well. However, with the reports noting that its Jet Set Radio reboot was going to be part of Sega’s Super Game plan, its fate remains unknown.

Through a recruitment video from a couple of years ago, Sega also confirmed that its new Crazy Taxi game will be a live service “massively multiplayer” experience, and that the in-game world will be designed to be “theme park-like” while still maintaining some degree of realism. These elements will work alongside the classic Crazy Taxi gameplay of picking up and dropping off passengers at high speeds, complete with police chases and elaborate stunts.
