Nine years after it launched to critical acclaim, Nier: Automata’s story seems set to continue

Nier: Automata has officially sold over 10 million copies since its initial release in 2017, and publisher Square Enix just uploaded a YouTube video to acknowledge the milestone. But the video’s ending suggests that it may be more than just a celebration of sales. In the final seconds of the video, a message appears on-screen: “Nier: Automata to be continued…”

Shortly after the YouTube video went live, Geoff Keighley posted a screenshot of the message on X.

Nier: Automata is the sequel to 2010’s Nier. In 2021, Nier: Automata actually got a sequel in the form of a mobile game that went offline in 2024. Clearly, fans weren’t really sold on that: last November, series creator Yoko Taro responded to fan frustration that Automata never got a proper sequel on console and PC, explaining that he had, in fact, been working on games. They just kept getting canceled.

Taro does appear to be involved in Nier: Automata‘s mysterious continuation. He shared the YouTube video on his X account, thanking players for their support, and is participating in the game’s ninth-anniversary livestream.

Obviously, there’s no telling what kind of project Yoko Taro and Square Enix may or may not have in the works, but the declaration that Nier: Automata will be “continued” certainly suggests that either a spin-off or direct sequel is on the way. It could also come in the form of some non-video game media, like Nier: Automata Ver1.1a, the excellent anime that came out in 2023, and adapts the story of the game.
