Just days after revealing details about the world and combat of Code Vein 2, Bandai Namco has released a brand new trailer, this time focusing on a single character: Zenon Gryfgote. The trailer, which you can check out below, clocks in at almost 3 minutes in length, and gives a closer look at the character described as “the heretical revenant/hero condemned to ten thousand years of imprisonment.”

When it comes to personality, Zenon Gryfgote appears to be quite theatrical, inviting players to his “zen chamber” before breaking out into a full-on musical number. Through his song, the character talks about his motivation to work towards tomorrow “in a world covered by darkness” where “joy is slipping away.”

After a couple of lines of Zenon’s song, the trailer then gives us a look at what gameplay alongside the character will look like. Teaming up with Zenon appears to have a number of benefits, including his use of sweeping attacks and special abilities.

In terms of design, Zenon Gryfgote appears to be a playful spin on the idea of a “dark armored knight” thanks in large part to his armor’s ostentatious decorations, as well as the expressions he can pull off thanks to the digital face on his helmet. Further showcasing the character’s submissive nature, the trailer shows off how he is able to summon a number of demons who first appear to simply be ornate statues, before they come alive and start playing their own musical instruments to accompany Zenon’s song.

The overview trailer from earlier this week gave us a look at a world-ending event, and the major threat, the Luna Rapacis, that will have to be dealt with by the player in the role of the Revenant Hunter. The main story, this time around, will revolve around strengthening the seal of four heroes to prevent the catastrophic Resurgence from happening.

As was shown off in the Zenon Gryfgote trailer, teaming up with other characters throughout the world will be an important aspect of Code Vein 2. The overview trailer also showcased this with the player teaming up with a variety of characters. Along with this, players can also make use of fusing with their allies to get a power boost useful for taking on stronger foes.

Code Vein 2 is coming out on January 29 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Producer Keita Iizuka confirmed earlier this month that the title will be around the same length as its predecessor, and maybe slightly longer. The producer also spoke about not referring to Code Vein 2 as a Souls-like. Instead, the game is described as a “dramatic exploration action-RPG”.

“What seems to be common across the board [in Souls-likes] as a genre is providing a sense of accomplishment for the players. By them going into different fields to explore and [having] different experiences, they’ll be able to gain the experience so that they can take on more challenging dungeons or enemies,” said Iizuka.
