007: First Light Studio Had to Discuss “Weird Things” Like Which Colored Cars Bond Wouldn’t Drive

IO Interactive has been revealing quite a few details about the upcoming 007: First Light en route to its May 27th release date. When it comes to some of the more fun details about its development, however, the studio has now revealed that many conversations were had over what color Bond’s iconic cars would be. In an interview with PCGamer, franchise art director Rasmus Poulsen was asked about the difficulties that the studio may have faced in its depiction of James Bond from license holder Amazon.

Poulsen revealed that 007: First Light was always going to feature a young James Bond right from day one. He noted that future conversations with Amazon got easier when these kinds of foundations were already set. “The youthful take has been a go from day one,” he said. “I think we put a lot of effort and honour into doing our homework, because we take this extremely seriously… the conversation gets easier when you have a foundation like that.”

When it comes to subjects that actually warranted more in-depth discussions, Poulsen went as far as to call them “weird”, like the color of Bond’s car. “Really weird things get discussed, right? … What colour car would Bond never drive? People think one thing, people think another thing. We go like, ‘Well, that’s a weird discussion,’” he said before noting that these kinds of discussions can often be fun and strange. “Really fun, really strange offshoots that demanded three meetings… whereas really big, tent-pole decisions,” were decided quickly.

Poulsen has also confirmed that Bond would never drive a white colored car. However, it all comes down to how one looks at the character, and other facts, like “whether [the car]’s leased or not, whether it’s rented locally or not.”

As for Bond himself, the character is being played by Patrick Gibson in 007: First Light. Commenting on his performance, the actor behind Bond’s in-game mentor John Greenway, Lennie James, has praised Gibson and went as far as to say that he should be in the running to depict the character in future films.

“He’s fantastic in our version of Bond, and I genuinely think he should be a candidate for the main role that they’re trying to find someone for,” said James. “I’m sure he’s under consideration. The people in control would be mad not to consider him.”

In the meantime, IO Interactive has recently revealed that a full playthrough of 007: First Light will take an average player around 20 hours to beat. However, it is worth noting that the studio is known for offering high replayability with its Hitman franchise. As such, the fact that 007: First Light will also offer a few sandbox levels could indicate that players will find plenty of reasons to return to the title even after rolling credits. The studio also said that the 20-hour time to beat is without the use of the Tac Sim mode, which offers players more ways to experience different scenarios based on the in-game missions.

007: First Light is coming to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. However, the Switch 2 version has been pushed back to Summer.
