Now that it doesn’t have to worry about a busy September release window, One More Level has revealed new gameplay and details for Valor Mortis ahead of this month’s launch. Set in alternate-history Europe, you play as William, who seemingly rises from the dead to answer the call of the “Emperor” (implied to be Napoleon).
Unfortunately, the world has fallen apart due to the devastation wrought by war and the Crimson Plague, which has created all kinds of monstrosities. Combating them means using blades, flintlock pistols and rifles, dodging and parrying where possible. But that’s not all. William will also discover Transmutations that grant everything from a flamethrower in his palm to a grapple for traversing the environment.
He’ll also receive Catalysts – perk points that can be spent to enhance certain properties, like melee damage. Then there are Ambers, described as “build-altering.” They often carry trade-offs, but the benefits – like melee strikes recovering more health, even if you can’t heal on demand – seem worthwhile.
What’s intriguing about all this – besides the Shrike, who leads a rebellion against the Emperor (or so it seems) – is the nightmarish inner world that William can venture to. Is this the inner reaches of his mind? Why is it slowly filling up with giant versions of slain bosses?
We’ll find out when Valor Mortis launches on October 13th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC for $40.
