Creative Assembly only recently announced the latest entry in its Total War series, Total War: Medieval 3, but that hasn’t stopped the British developer from adding yet another goliath IP to its collection with the announcement of Total War: Warhammer 40,000.

Announced at The Game Awards on Thursday — by grim dark enthusiast David Harbour, no less — the strategy turn-based video game series announcement of a collaboration with Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 IP doesn’t come as too big a surprise. Creative Assembly has already released a trio of Total War: Warhammer games, after all. But rumors had been circling about what was expected to come next for the Total War series for a while now, with some speculation pointing to the next Total War game announcement being a collaboration with another prestigious sci-fi franchise: Star Wars.

However, eagle-eyed gamers caught wind of several clues in the Total War dev tools during an anniversary presentation from Creative Assembly that cast doubt on Star Wars as the IP, leading to the conclusion that the Warhammer 40,000 universe would be coming to the Total War world instead. Turns out, they were right.

Warhammer 40,000 is a beloved sci-fi franchise that makes the tragedies of Star Wars look like child’s play. It’s set in the distant future, where humanity has grown complacent and is largely unprepared when supernatural creatures and aliens attack. The setting is well-known for its grim, gritty tone, and all in all, lack of hope. Unlike Medieval 3, Warhammer 40,000 boasts futuristic weaponry, supernatural powers, and demons, flinging realism aside to combine sci-fi and fantasy. We’re curious about how Creative Assembly will implement that in gameplay, but if anyone can do it, it’s the developers behind one of the best war and strategy game franchises.
