Steam is here to keep your entire weekend busy with a variety of game trials that are totally free to play for a few days. The big highlight is the Master Collection version of Metal Gear Solid, the first 3D game in the venerated espionage series. If that’s not your bag, there are also wacky multiplayer games, shooters, and even something for the furries among us.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version also includes Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, and Metal Gear Solid (as well as the VR and special missions). If you’re in a bookish mood, the collection also includes screenplay books and master books for all the titles. These digital archives break down the events of every game, offer commentary, provide character biographies, and even map layouts and Easter eggs. Back in 2023, gamexplore said that the wider collection and its additional digital materials belong in a museum. This is also the best and only way to play some of these titles on modern hardware.
The game trial, which lasts from July 24 to July 27, is a part of a wider discount event for the first three Metal Gear Solid games in Master Collection Volume 1. Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Volume 2, which packs Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, will be released on Aug. 27 — so it’s a great time to brush up on your cardboard box skills.
MGS‘s main story only takes around 11 hours to beat, something that could totally be accomplished over a weekend.

The completely free-to-keep titles are Yet Another Zombie Defense HD and The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu — Lost Explorers’ Swords Pack. The latter is a DLC for the “mostly positive” four-player co-op title from Ace Team, which was released earlier this month.
