Developer Level 5 has announced that the new entry in its puzzle game series Professor Layton, dubbed Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, is slated for release on PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 10th. The release date was unveiled with a trailer during Nintendo’s September 2026 Direct showcase. Check it out below.
Sticking to series tradition, players will once more take on the role of Hershel Layton, who teams up with young puzzle-solving detective Luke Triton in the “town of inventions” – Steam Bison. The town is filled with many mysteries, the answers to which can be uncovered by players solving a variety of logic-based puzzles. During the course of a playthrough, players will draw lines, flip switches, unlock complex mechanisms, pick, and even decode number-based solutions.
Level 5 has said that Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is slated to feature the biggest collection of puzzles in the franchise’s storied history, with each one uncovering more of the story and revealing more secrets hiding under Steam Bison’s surface. Interestingly, the title also features a co-operative mode that allows players to recruit their friends and family to help them solve particularly difficult puzzles.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam has been in development for quite some time, having been announced all the way back in February 2023. Since then, Level 5 has been slowly revealing more and more details about the game. The fact that it would be coming to more platforms than just the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 was announced earlier this year.
