Onimusha: Way of the Sword Has Sold Over 1 Million Copies on Launch Day

Onimusha may have remained largely dormant for the past two decades or so, but that hasn’t stopped Capcom’s latest entry. Following the launch of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the publisher announced over one million sales within its first 24 hours.

It also confirmed that the overall franchise has crossed 10 million sales. Interestingly, Capcom noted that it’s “focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently.” The goal is to “further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title.”

This seemingly indicates that Way of the Sword isn’t the last entry that we’ll be seeing for a while – a relief, considering how long fans had to wait after Dawn of Dreams. Of course, the other part about “re-activating IPs” is also cause for some optimism. It could mean that Capcom will bring back franchises like Dino Crisis, whose last major entry (and least well-received) was in 2003.

With Dino Crisis 2 coming to the PlayStation Plus Classics roster later this year, there’s certainly hope. Now, whether this means Mega Man Legends is due for a revival anytime soon is another story entirely.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Check out our review, where we scored it an 8 out of 10, praising the combat and characters, though the story and side content felt noticeably less compelling.
