After years of interminable waiting, Discord has officially released an app for Quest, which is now available for free on the Horizon Store.
While Quest fans have been begging for an official Discord app for years now, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth remarked in May 2024 that while the company wanted to have some sort of Discord integration, it was ultimately up to Discord to make the first move.
Granted, that didn’t stop Quest users from using the popular chatting platform. Before this week, users could sideload the Android apk, or conversely use it in Quest’s web browser, all of which was a bit of an awkward dance if you were hoping to get a 1:1 chatting experience to what you find on PC or mobile.
Now, Discord is officially available to download directly in the Horizon Store for Quest 2 and above. Discord says the app comes with all of the usual features, including all your servers, DM, and Group DM conversations.
“It’s the full, proper Discord experience,” the company says. “And since your Meta Quest headset already has a mic built-in, you can hop in and out of Discord calls any time without fiddling with an external device beforehand.”
Discord is sweetening the pot for anyone who downloads the Quest app by offering one month of Nitro for free, which unlocks advanced customization, higher file sharing limits, HD streaming, and special platform rewards. It’s apparently only available to first-time Nitro purchasers however.
At least for now, it appears the app’s initial release is still in its teething stage; some user reviews mention app crashes and buggy behavior that hopefully will be fixed in future updates. In the meantime, you can find Discord for Quest here.
